David Gerstein

David Gerstein

Born in Jerusalem ,1944, Gerstein is one of Israel’s most famous artists. His artworks depict local, autobiographical and universal elements as he draws inspiration from nature, urban landscapes, human activities and daily life. His use of spectacular color and layering creates his own unique and vivacious style.

Gerstein, a painter and sculptor, pushes the limitations of two-dimensional painting into three-dimensional sculpture. Using lasers to precisely cut his designs from paper, aluminum and other metals, Gerstein paints each cutout either by hand or through serigraphy or screen printing techniques. Once painted, the cutouts are layered to bring to life a three-dimensional art piece.
Gerstein studied painting and drawing at Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem, Ècole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Art in Paris, and the Arts Student League in New York. He studied lithography and screen printing at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, where he completed his MA.
Gerstein is known for his outdoor sculptures, many of which adorn city squares in Israel and around the world. Gerstein’s work can be found in museums and private collections worldwide.
